Scott’s hardtail with invisible battery
Featuring Bosch’s revolutionary PowerTube, completely integrating the battery into the frame, the Scott Aspect 40 is a beautifully crafted electric mountain bike that’s built on the proven successes of its predecessors. This is a package that’s ideal for the rider that’s looking for a smooth, comfortable off-road ride, with a good level of components.
The Bosch PowerTube is the latest development into battery integration, entirely hiding the battery within the frame of the bike. It makes for clean lines, and hence is much less obviously an electric bike. Weighing in at just 2.8kg it is one of the lightest batteries on the market, further reducing its impact on the overall feel of the bike. Despite it’s modest design, it still packs impressive capacity – the 500Wh on offer should be more than enough to power you through even the most demanding of rides. The battery is easy to remove and insert, popping out of the frame by a couple of centimetres when unlocked.
Bosch Performance Line CX
The bike has the Bosch Performance Line CX motor. This is Bosch’s most powerful and market leading motor capable of up to 300% assistance (75 Newton Metres) in Turbo. The Bosch system has 4 levels of assistance – from Eco (50% assistance) up to 300%. The system includes the dynamic E-MTB mode. This responds to the rider’s needs and will switch seamlessly between Tour and Turbo mode as needed depending on the cadence rate of the rider. The Bosch motor has the advantage over other motors in its class:
- Proven reliability – demonstrated by the huge numbers of brands that have adopted it.
- A smooth assistance. You will not lurch off, but if power is what you want then there is plenty
- Consistency – some of the other motors may get to the same power output but they have problems maintaining this.
Suspension is provided by Suntour XCM34 front forks, with remote lockout. They’ll give you 120mm of travel and are adjustable for preload. The Shimano Hydraulic disc brakes provide safe, predictable and powerful stopping ability, with 180mm rotors front and rear.
The rims are Syncros with Shimano hubs and black spokes. Tyres are puncture resistant 29″ Kenda SlantSix – 2.35″ wide. Gears are 9-speed Shimano with 11-36 Acera cassette.
This is an excellent showcase for the PowerTube 500, matching it to the impressive power of the Performance Line CX.
Scott have sometimes been at the expensive end of the market. However at £2499 we feel that this bike represents excellent value.
