Excellently Well Spec’d Trail Bike
We continue to be very impressed with the Moustache bikes and from their Full Suspension MTB range we have selected this bike as our favourite because of its excellent spec and value when we hold it up against other brands.
Moustache may not be a brand that traditional MTB riders are familiar with. This is because they only do e-bikes and as a result the geometry and handling of the bike is specifically set up for the fact that it has a motor and battery. The net result is that these bikes will handle the trails at least as well as a non-electric bike and because you have that extra power available when you need it they are quickly becoming the bike of choice.
The spec on this bike really speaks for itself. Starting with the suspension the bike is set up with the top of its class for the trails. The front forks are Fox 34 (e-bike specific) with 140 mm of travel and black stanchions. The rear shock is Moustache’s own, with 2 positions, 140mm of travel and adjustable airpressure and rebound. Per Moustache this will give you ‘insane grip on the rear wheel.’ We won’t argue with that.
The Groupset is Shimano XTR 11 speed with teeth on the cassette ranging from 11 to 46.
The Magura brakes are stunning to use giving a much firmer hold than other brakes we have tried. The rotors are 200m on the front and 180 mm on the back. On the front the stopping power is assured with 4 pistons while there are 2 on the rear.
The dropper seatpost is controlled from the handle bars with 125 mm of travel on the large frame and 100 mm on the medium.
The Electric Part
The electric part of this bike is exactly what you would expect from a bike of this calibre – that is to say the Bosch Performance line CX and a 500 watt hour battery. In our view the Bosch motor is still the best because of its awesome power (75 nm of torque) which translates into 300% assistance. Compared to other motors the assist given by the motor is both consistent and smooth. It just feels natural.
The battery is integrated into the frame and this has been achieved by hollowing out the down tube. It means that the battery can easily be taken on and off the bike and if anything we prefer this to the powertube.
Moustache bikes are sold with a five year warranty on the frame (2 years on the forks – often thse are just one year) and two years on the electrics.
The medium size bike is a 44 cm frame (about 17″) this will suit someone from 1.68m to 1.85m.
The largest is a 50 cm frame (just under 20″) for someone from 1.83 m to 2 m.
These are only guides of course and will depend on leg length, rider preference etc.
