Great Touring / Commuter Bike from KTM
This KTM Macina Sport 520 Gen4CX is a great all-rounder that will happily take you to work and back all week, then tour country lanes at the weekend. Not to mention trips to the shops in-between. This one features the latest Bosch Performanceline CX Gen4 motor and a 500Wh battery. So you get top power and really good range for wherever you want to go.
The bike comes ready fitted with lights, mudguards and a rack. The lights run from the main battery and are simply turned on and off from the handlebars. You don’t need to remember to charge your lights separately and you’ve always got them on the bike when you need them. They are also better from a security point of view as they are bolted to the bike.
The E-Bike System
The bike has the new Bosch Performanceline CX Gen4 motor. This is Bosch’s most powerful and market leading motor capable of up to 340% assistance (75 Newton Metres) in Turbo. The Bosch system has 4 levels of assistance – from Eco (50% assistance) up to 340%. The system includes the dynamic E-MTB mode. This responds to the rider’s needs and will switch seamlessly between Tour and Turbo mode as needed depending on the cadence rate of the rider. The Bosch motor has the advantage over other motors in its class:
- Proven reliability – demonstrated by the huge numbers of brands that have adopted it.
- A smooth assistance. You will not lurch off, but if power is what you want then there is plenty
- Consistency – some of the other motors may get to the same power output but they have problems maintaining this.
- Now has full size chainring & no resistance if pedaling without assistance.
The battery is a Bosch Powertube – the 500 watt hour. This will give you a range of up to about 90 miles in Eco mode and even in Turbo will go about 30 miles. A good estimate of the range you should expect using the different levels of assistance and on variable terrain is 50 miles. The Bosch batteries have an excellent battery management system. The battery can be charged at any time, does not need to be discharged and the charging process can be interrupted without harming the battery. It can also be left for extended periods, for example over the winter, without needing to be recharged.
The battery comes with a 4 amp charger. This will charge the 500 Wh battery in 4.5 hours from flat.
The Other Bits
The KTM Macina Sport 520 Gen4CX differs slightly from the Sport 510, which is reflected in the lower price. The main difference is this one has an integrated battery, rather than the Powertube version. It’s mainly a visual difference. Another change on this one is the Shimano 9-speed Altus gears, compared to 10 speed on the 510. There’s a comfortable Selle Royal saddle, practical Racktime rack and Ergon grips (but without the bar-ends you get on the 510). The lights are by Busch + Müller and the tyres are Schwalbe Marathon Mondial.
This is another winner from KTM. As ever – excellent build quality, solid reliability and very good value for money.
