Excellent Hybrid / Cross Bike from KTM for 2019
This has been our favourite bike for the past 3 years. The latest version of it has been upgraded to include the largest battery (the Bosch 500 wh).
This is a truly versatile bike that is designed for road and light off road – woodland tracks, towpaths etc. This year’s version has tyres with a more rugged profile making it even more adaptable.
The other change this year is that they have made the bike ready for Lights, Mudguards and a Rack to be easily fitted at the customer’s request.
There are two frame shapes – this one has the lower cross bar, hence described as ladies’. However, it s not exclusively for ladies of course and some people just find it easier to get on and off the bike with this frame type. In all other respect it is the same as the ‘men’s’ version. The E-Bike System
The bike has the Bosch performance line CX motor. This is Bosch’s most powerful and market leading motor capable of up to 300% assistance (75 Newton Metres) in Turbo. The Bosch system has 4 levels of assistance – from Eco (50% assistance) up to 300%. The system includes the dynamic E-MTB mode. This responds to the rider’s needs and will switch seamlessly between Tour and Turbo mode as needed depending on the cadence rate of the rider. The Bosch motor has the advantage over other motors in its class:
- Proven reliability – demonstrated by the huge numbers of brands that have adopted it.
- A smooth assistance. You will not lurch off, but if power is what you want then there is plenty
- Consistency – some of the other motors may get to the same power output but they have problems maintaining this.
The battery is the largest battery from Bosch – the 500 watt hour battery. This will give you a range of up to about 90 miles in Eco mode and even in Turbo will go about 30 miles. A good estimate of the range you should expect using the different levels of assistance and on variable terrain is 50 miles. The Bosch batteries have an excellent battery management system. The battery can be charged at any time, does not need to be discharged and the charging process can be interrupted without harming the battery. It can also be left for extended periods, for example over the winter, without needing to be recharged.
The battery comes with a 4 amp charger. This will charge the 500 wh battery in 4.5 hours from flat.
We love this bike because it is very versatile, sporty and it looks like a bike. We have not found another e-bike on the market that can match it for these credentials. Many of our customers want to have a bike that they can use both on and off road without it being a mountain bike. If this is you, then we strongly recommend this bike, especially now as it has been upgraded with the 500 wh battery.
The bike comes bare (no mudguards, lights or rack). This makes the bike relatively light (21.8 kg) and gives it a sporty look, but if required these can all be added. The bike even comes with internal wiring so that lights can be easily connected to run off the battery – a brilliant innovation.
The tyres at 47 mm (1.85 inches) are wider than standard road tyres but not as wide as most mountain bike tyres (about 2.1 in plus). They have a mountain bike (nobbly) profile so will handle sticky, muddy conditions. Because of the assistance from the motor if you are riding the bike on the road then any rolling resistance is irrelevant.
Other features include hydraulic disc brakes, 9 speed Shimano gears (deore) and a kick stand.
We usually carry this bike in a 46 cm frame. This will suit someone from about 5’2″ to 5’7″ depending on leg length and personal preference. There are various other sizes available but this is the smallest frame size.
We really like this bike and think you will too. With the CX motor, the large battery and the adaptability to add rack, mudguards and lights it has everything you could want.
