Excellent Hybrid / Cross Bike from KTM for 2019
This bike is a variant on the KTM Macina Cross 9 CX 5 bike that has been so popular in the past few years. This one has the Bosch Activeline Plus motor and it has a choice of battery size (400 or 500 watt hour).
The E-Bike System
As mentioned the bike comes with the Bosch Activeline Plus motor. This is not as powerful as the Performanceline series and if you are looking for as much power as possible then we recommend looking at the Cross 9 CX 5 version. This motor gives you 50 Newton Metres of torque, compared to 75 Newton Metres with the CX motor. This is still a lot of help and to give it some perspective it will still add 250% to the power that you put into the pedals. The advantage of this motor is that it is a bit lighter than the Performanceline. There is also a little less resistance than the CX motor because there is no gearing in the motor. For this reason it is potentially better for people who either turn the motor off or they expect to ride faster than the speed restriction of the motor (about 16 mph).
If you are unsure about the motor that is right for you we recommend that you try this bike and also the CX5 version.
The battery is on the downtube but is very discreet with a cover than sleekly goes over the battery blending in with the shape of the frame.
The bike is available with the 400 watt hour battery or the larger 500 watt hour. The larger battery will give you a range of about 50 miles – realistically. That is not a best case but is an expected number of miles assuming average conditions and using all the levels of assistance. The smaller battery has a range of about 40 miles. If you go for the 400 battery then the price is £200 cheaper at £1899. It will also come with a smaller charger that will take longer to charge the battery (7 hours from flat instead of 3.5).
Firstly it is a great looking bike. We love the way that the battery is integrated into the frame, with a streamlined cover. This makes the battery easier to remove than the Powertube, which can be a bit of a fiddle. The blue and white of the frame is very striking.
It is a little less sporty than the CX5 version and perhaps designed for more casual riding. The tyre is also a bit narrower (42 mm as opposed to 47 mm) so not designed so much for off road use but still very able to cope with paths and tracks.
The bike comes bare (no mudguards, lights or rack). This makes the bike relatively light (21.4 kg) but if required these can all be added. The bike even comes with internal wiring so that lights can be easily connected to run off the battery – a brilliant innovation.
The tyres at 42 mm are wider than standard road tyres but not as wide as most mountain bike tyres (about 2.1 in plus). They have a mountain bike (nobbly) profile so will handle sticky, muddy conditions. Because of the assistance from the motor if you are riding the bike on the road then any rolling resistance is irrelevant.
Other features include hydraulic disc brakes, 9 speed Shimano gears (altus) and a kick stand.
We carry this bike in a 51 cm frame. This will suit someone from about 5’6″ to 5’11” depending on leg length and personal preference. The bikes is also available in a 46, 56 and 60 cm frame.
