EMU Mini

Description

Excellent Light Mini Folding Bike

EMU are not the best known electric bike manufacturer but they are really starting to make an impact and we love what they are doing. The bikes are well thought out, great to ride (and look at) and very good value.

EMU have, with good cause, called this the Mini.  We have been waiting for a lightweight folding bike and we are delighted with the bike that EMU have produced. Everything about its design is spot on making for a bike that is realistic to commute with.

Electric Features

The bike packs a great punch with the 250 watt motor on the front wheel. The battery is ingeniously hidden in the seat tube of the bike and is available in 2 sizes – 5.2 amp hour or 7 amp hour. EMU have estimated the range for these batteries to be 12 miles for the smaller one and 18 miles for the larger. This seems realistic to us and if ridden economically we think you can probably better this, bearing in mind that an 11 amp hour battery can have a range of up to about 70 miles. The motor has 5 levels of assistance and will get you up those steep hills with minimal effort.

The battery can be removed for charging or it can be charged in situ and will take about 3 hours to fully charge.

Other Features

The bike folds easily and very compactly. The handle bar stem folds down, the pedals fold in and the bike then folds in the middle so that you can put the bike in the back of a car or for storage at home or in a motor home. Because it only weighs 16 kg (most electric bikes are at least 20kg) it can be picked up and carried on to a train etc.

The wheel size is really mini – just 16″ but very strong and it is fitted with wide tyres for extra comfort.

It has 3 Shimano hub gears, which is plenty for this kind of bike and because it is light the bike can be pedalled easily if the batter is switched off.

It also comes with disc brakes.

We are very pleased with the build quality of this bike. It is robust, simple and stylish.

The bike does not come with a rack – but for £30 the rack can be added – see the picture in the gallery above.

Conclusion

This is a great addition to the EMU stable of bikes. We have been waiting for a lighter folding bike and this one exceeds our expectations. We think that you will really enjoy riding it and at £999 it is excellent value.
