Freego Folding Light

A Light Folding Electric Bike – With Integrated Battery – Last one!

With this bike Freego have achieved two things that many much bigger and better known brands are still only striving for. Firstly, as the name suggests,  it is light – certainly by electric bike standards. A light folding electric bike is essentially the holy grail of electric bikes. Many people come into our shop looking for one of these, so that they can easily put it in the back of their car and take it onto trains.

To put it into context most of the folding electric bikes weigh about 25kg. The Freego Folding Light is just 19kg. Considering that it has a battery and a motor this is a considerable achievement.

Secondly the battery is neatly integrated into the frame,  making it almost impossible to discern at first glance that the bike is electric. The battery has a smaller capacity than you would expect on a standard bike but it is still an impressive 280 watt hours. This will give you a range of up to 25 miles.  Despite being integrated into the frame, the battery can still be accessed for charging without removing it. Alternatively the battery can be removed when the bike is folded, so that the battery can be taken into the house for charging.

Shimano Gears

As well as being light it is very well equipped with 3 speed Shimano hub gears. 3 gears are ample when you have the help of the motor. Some manufacturers have made the mistake of making their bikes single speed in an attempt to to keep the bike light. However, unless you have a very powerful motor with only one gear you simply won’t get up the steeper hills. With 3 gears you have all the flexibility you need.

The saddle is a very comfortable Selle Royale gel saddle.

Assistance and Throttle

The bike has 5 modes of assistance as well as a throttle, which, so long as you are pedalling, even if very slowly, you can use to take the bike right upto 15.5 mph with hardly any effort at all. Of course, the more you use the throttle the more battery you will use.

The folding mechanism is an improvement on the heavier model with a neat and easy to use locking mechanism. There is also a magnet attached to the rear wheel and the front fork so that when folded the bike stays together without the need of a strap.

There are a lot of folding electric bikes on the market. If you are looking for relatively short distances (but still upto about 25 miles) and you want it to be not too heavy then this really is a great bike.

Summary

We really like this bike and have sold many to some very satisfied customers. It is a viable folding bike for commuters to take on the train. At this price it is a great buy.
