Gazelle are a Dutch company that make quality bikes for discerning customers. They are the premium brand in Holland and have the honour of a Royal seal of approval, so that their full name is Royal Dutch Gazelle. The Dutch consider their bikes to be more than just a leisure item; it is their primary form of transport and they build them to last with extensive testing carried out during the manufacturing process in their factory in Holland.

Their confidence in the quality of their bikes is backed up by a 10 years warranty on the frames, 5 years on suspension front forks and 2 years on all other components.

The Orange C8 differs from a number of the other bikes has it has an Impulse motor and battery. Like the Bosch motor it is mid-mounted between the cranks but is a little more discrete than the Bosch and with the chain guard it is almost invisible. The Impulse motor has 3 modes of assistance and is exceptionally quiet. Its USP is that it has 'Shift Sensor' technolgy. This means that when you change gears the motor switches off momentarily giving the hub gears a split second respite so that the gears can be changed smoothly. This is a great innovation and saves the need to stop pedalling that is needed with some of the other systems.

With the Impulse system there is a choice of battery sizes. Included in the price is the silver 312 watt hour battery. This should be plenty for many riders, giving a range of up to 62 miles if you are riding in Eco. In the Power mode the range is up to 44 miles, depending on conditions etc.

The other battery options are:

Gold: 416 watt hours. Add £90 to the price. This battery size is approximately the same as the Bosch standard battery.

Platinum: 512 watt hours. Add £170 to the price.

As with the other Gazelles it has an enclosed chain case making the bike almost maintenance free. It has  a bright LED front light  and a rear light at the back of the rack, both of which are powered by the battery. The bike is fitted with a Dutch style AXA rear wheel lock. This means if you are just popping to the shop, then you can use this simple lock rather than have to carry about a monster lock. However if you are leaving the bike for more than just a few minutes an additional lock is always advised. A plug in chain lock can be added as an option.

The ride is even more comfortable because of the padded saddle and seat suspension post. Of course the comfort is enhanced by the upright position when riding that the Dutch are renowned for. They cannot understand why anyone would want to ride in a hunched position! While the bike zips along at a great pace you just feel that there is no need to hurry, rather just relax and enjoy the riding.  The stopping power is ensured by the Magura hydraulic rim brakes that are fitted to a number of the best electric bikes.
